The Sentinel Peak – Mont aux sources. A Drakensburg wonder

This post goes will go into the detail of the hike up to the chain ladder and beyond the fears.

The hike starts off with a long drive through Qwa Qwa a surprising huge town surrounded by beautiful and endless mountain ranges. The drive is long but interesting and you can’t go through it without taking a picture of the mosque of course.

Eventually you get to the entrance and drive on a 12km gravel road to the car park. Don’t forget to go to the loo, the hike is long. You will need to take your own toilet paper.

The path is initially very easy with hardly any incline. This stretch is perfect for the warm up until you reach the zigzag part which is a little steeper.

It takes about 2 hours to get to the chain ladders. The hike is long but not difficult. Some parts are very rocky and you have to climb a small ladder in the  middle as well.

Eventually after walking through some misty clouds, considering turning back, wondering if we’re going to fall off the edge of the never ending cliff path and marvelling at the spectacular views, we reached the ladder to mount doom. It took us exactly 2 hours.

Awaken

A 7 day trip to the Royal Natal, KZN and surely one of our most memorable trips to Drakensburg.

We spent most of our days in the Royal Natal Nature Reserve – an unchanged sanctuary which, in the summer, gifts you with endless streams from your first step.

Day 1 – Thukela gorge walk. Total 14km we walked 7. steak rotis, litchis, fererros.

Day 3 – Devils peak hike we didn’t go right up and then it rained

Day 3

Day 4 – A drizzly day saw us taking a short Rugged glen walk just outside the resort. The path was very unused and somewhat uninteresting compared to the nature reserve yet still beautiful. Turned back and went on a 2 and a half hour horseride in heaven.

Day 5 – Ouch! Sore bums! Sore arms! Aching back! Luckily the rain forced us to rest inside… well sort of

Day 6 – Feeling much better than yesterday we decided to shake out the last of the stiffness with a relatively easy hike. Starting off at Fairyglen, the path took us on a round trip through Gudu Pass and very near the grotto. A magnificent walk

Day 7 – 04:30 Jumuah morning RISE AND SHINE! Time to go up the chain ladder and enjoy the sentinel peak.
This was a 2 hour drive from the resort including a 7 km gravel road to the sentinel car park. The drive takes you through Qwa Qwa.
2 hours to the chain ladder and 1.5 hours down from the chain ladder. The minimum time you can spend on top is around 1.5 hours if you want to enjoy the view and walk to the tip. There is one alternate trip through the gulley for those who dont want to brave the chain ladder.
